Privacy
melange is new, and we want to learn what works for readers without learning who they are. This is everything it keeps.
Counting visits
We count page views, where visitors come from (the referring site), their country, language, browser and kind of device, and a few moments of reading: a page read, a chapter finished, a translation opened, the answer to our one question. That is how we see whether melange is being read, and where people stop.
The counting is done by Umami, running on our own server; nothing is sent to an analytics company or an advertiser. It sets no cookies and stores no IP address: your address is used, as it arrives, to look up a country and, with your browser and a secret that changes every month, to tell one visit from another. Nothing it keeps names you, and nothing joins it to an account.
Feedback
When you answer “Would you use melange?” or send something with Feedback, we keep what you wrote, the page you were on (and, while reading, the book, chapter and level), and the email address you gave, if you gave one, to answer you. With an account, it is kept with the account, and deleting the account deletes it. Only the people who run melange read it.
Your account
An account is an email address and a password (stored only as a hash), and what you read: your level, settings, places in books, and which translations you looked up or knew. It is used to keep your reading the same on every device and to choose what is shown in Spanish. The account page shows what is kept, lets you download all of it (your feedback included), and deletes it, and everything kept for it, at once.
This browser
Without an account, your place in a book, your level and your reading settings are kept in this browser's own storage, not on our server; so is whether you have answered our question, so it is asked once. Signing in sets one cookie, the session.
Payments
Melange is paid through Polar, who take the card and keep the invoices; we never see a card number. We keep the subscription's status and amount.
Questions, or something you want removed: send it with Feedback at the top of any page, with an address to answer.
